TLDR
We raised more than $50,000 for Our Block, an independent food and travel series focused on Black culture and communities across the U.S.
Me, a Black creator who cusses too much and does NOT aspire to labor, plus Michael (in the video above) who’s out here dreaming big with me, we did that.
We raised $54,709 to be exact.
That’s a lot of support, a lot of trust, in some scrappy creatives to get shit done. Thank you. Thank you for showing up for us and for Black storytelling. I’m fucking honored.
I cried a bit the last night of the crowdfunder as it sunk in that we’re really doing this.
Now What?
Now, my first step is a moment of celebration. A nice bottle of wine, a night of nothing but friends and good food sounds like exactly what I need. Big or small, I’m celebrating every win in this hellscape of a year. Every. Single. One.
But it’s also time to plan, and that’s where you come in. Help us choose where we’re taking Our Block for season one. Help us make this series the best it can be.
A couple of cities are sure picks for us to feature in episodes…
Washington, DC as my home and formerly Chocolate City is a must. It’s where this all really began for me and I somehow morphed from a US diplomat into a creator (yeah, really).
Oakland, CA is another place we’re not willing to waver on, as such a historic place for Black Americans and a city with a somewhat conflicting reputation that will add depth to any episode.
Chicago, IL is another city that me and Michael both feel pretty strongly about including. Also yes it’s an excuse to visit in the summer when Chicago really shines.
But we need your help choosing the other locations to include in season one. We really want to ensure broad geographic and cultural representation for the series.
So, watch this video with me and Michael Johnson, award-winning producer and creator of Our Block, as we talk next steps and locations. Then vote on your picks below. Help steer us as we begin.
And just a reminder…
